Emergency Lighting Servicing

Emergency lighting is a critical element in the process of evacuating a building safely during the outbreak of a fire. They are required when the main power supply is affected and normal lighting has stopped working. Without emergency lighting a building could be placed in sudden darkness, leading to panic and a rushed evacuation.

In such an event emergency lighting will be called upon to operate fully automatically so that a building is completely illuminated. This will allow occupants to conduct a safe evacuation. This is because escape routes will be visible, allowing clear passage to safety.

UK fire safety legislation stipulates that emergency lighting has to be fully tested once a year, and monitored closely every month. The legislation says that:

“The latest British Standard recommends that you have a 3 hour emergency lighting test once a year, during which your main light circuit should be switched off and your emergency lights left on for a 3 hour period, to test if any fail to work for the full duration. The 3 hour time window is to allow the fire brigade time to work in the event of a fire once all of the building’s occupants have safely evacuated.”

Here at Surefire our skilled engineers are able to undertake thorough testing of your emergency lighting systems to ensure each component is working as it should. We will check a building’s escape route, open area and high risk task area lighting.
