Fire Protection and Control
Keeping a commercial property safe from a fire will enable a business to operate smoothly without disruption. Making sure machinery is not damaged and all staff are safe and know what to do in the event of a fire will allow work flow to continue as normal.
The aim of fire protection and control is to provide staff with time to evacuate a building in a safe manner. Controlling a fire before it can be extinguished completely will help to minimise damage costs and limit a business’s downtime.
There are two types of fire protection, active and passive. Both have an integral role to play to protect a commercial building from a fire.
Active: Active fire systems fight against a fire and help to put it out. Fire sprinklers and extinguishers are commonly used for this task. Having these systems in place and able to be used as soon as a fire breaks out is essential for a successful active fire safety plan.
Passive: Passive fire protection is all about limiting the spread of a fire and protecting escape routes. Specialist systems can be placed within the structure of building with the aim of compartmentalising it. This way a fire can be restricted for a certain period of time to only one area of a building to allow a phased or simultaneous evacuation.
