First opened in 1960, the BBC Television Centre in Wood Lane became an iconic building recognised around the word. Sadly, the building was closed in 2013, after 53 years at the forefront of television making.
During its long history, Surefire supported the vast array of gas suppression systems throughout the centre. Now that redevelopment of the site has moved a step closer with work due to commence in 2015, Surefire were asked to remove all the gas cylinders and de-commission some of the gas suppression systems on site. Some 350 cylinders were de-commissioned and removed from site, which involved close liaison with the client and engineering teams as major hurdles had to be overcome before commencement of the works.
De-commissioning and cylinder pressure testing can present complex issues to the engineer, as safety is paramount. Only suitably trained personnel should operate and work on gas suppression systems and to be third party accredited is must. Surefire are BAFE SP203 part 3 accredited for gas suppression installation and maintenance, and engineers are F-Gas trained.
